Victory Curls Long Hair Styling Tips For Perfect Rolls

I was a kid who watched more films from the past than contemporary television shows or cartoons. So it’s not a surprise that many of my most-loved everyday outfits resemble pinup Halloween costumes!

However, I haven’t had the pleasure of making Victory Rolls in a while (a fashion that gained popularity during the 40s). I’m glad to say that this style can be pulled off in any length of hair. It’s perfect if you’re planning to create a retro style for one of your themed parties this month or if you need to add a vintage style to your daily hairstyle.

The process of replicating this look takes some patience and time However, with a little practice and a few clear guidelines Anyone who has hair of a medium length is able to recreate the look.

What Is A Victory Roll?

The victory roll an iconic hairstyle that features distinct hair-rolls that are rolled up typically placed at the front or along either side. The hairstyle was loved by American women in the 1940s, especially when it was World War II.

The originator of the victory rolls is not known. However, it is believed they got their name from the maneuvers of fighter aircraft during the period when US forces were part of the Allied powers.

The planes would perform various roles in the sky in celebration of victories, and the hairstyle is believed to be a resemblance of that. The hairstyles of women in this particular manner were a tribute to the courage and excitement of fighter pilots.

This is the reason why this style is sometimes regarded as an indication of women’s strength and determination during times of conflict. Today, it is an ideal choice for fashionistas and fashion-conscious retro enthusiasts.

My Six Steps To An Easy Vintage Victory Roll Hairstyle

  1. 1. Curl all of the hair using 1 inch curling iron with that direction for the pin curls facing downwards. Repeat the process over the entire head using that front-facing curl “on base” where it has a bit of height. The best curling iron is Hot Tools Gold 1”. I create every hairstyle I have ever worn with this model and the curls are long-lasting.
  2. 2. Cut off the clipped curls after they’ve had time to cool. Separate the curls using your fingers. Then, smooth the hair to create the wave shape that we’ll finish in the future.
  3. 3. Create a vertical portion over the ear. Take the front portion you created in your hands. It will be back playing around with this in a frenzied manner to make the first winning roll. The curl should be twirled and wrapped around your palm, and smooth the edges as you move. Pin the roll inside and along the sides of the roll. Cover the pins however you can.
  4. 4. Repeat the process on the opposite side, and then moving it around your hands while smoothing it. Continue spraying, smoothing and pin. The most effective teasing comb combination will be Spornette Little wonder. I swear by them!
  5. 5. The next step is the top bumper curl. There are a variety of options to do this but for this video I’ve used it as the typical pinup girl front-wave. Tease the underside and put the pin with a duck bill underneath the wave to secure it while smoothing, spraying and creating waves as you move. Pin as many times as you need to as you can, and try your best to cover the pins.
  6. 6. Focus on the remainder part of your hair. It’s formed a lovely wave pattern. You can enhance this by using duck bill clips or simply spray and smooth while you go like I did here.

I hope you’ll follow the tutorial and master some simple techniques for a classic hairstyle from the victory rolls.

Variations In Victory Rolls According To Your Hair Type

Victory rolls can be adapted to accommodate various hair lengths, types, and styles. Here are a few popular modifications that make this timeless look accessible to anyone. Check them out!

  • The Short Hair Victory Rolls Smaller rolls may be made near the crown or on the sides of the head when you have short hair. This ensures that the style is proportional. Apply a strong-hold hairspray as well as Bobby pins to hold the rolls to each other.

You can also add accessories like bandanas, clips with a decorative design, or even a bouquet for a truly 1940s-inspired look.

  • Curly Hair Victory Rolls Curly hair gives the natural look and texture of victory rolls. Make your curls more defined with the curling wand, or leave them natural to create a romantic and soft appearance. Integrate the curls into the rolls by securing them loosely. You can also tease them to increase the fullness of your curls.
  • Braided Victory Rolls: Combine victory rolls with braids for an original twist. You can braid the sections of hair that run towards the rolls for an organized look, or wrap a braid around the bottom of each roll to provide elaborate details.

This style gives depth and a unique look to the hairstyle, making it the perfect choice for formal events or weddings.

  • Half-Up Victory Rollers: A half-up roll is the perfect alternative for medium or long-hair. Make rolls using the top part of your hair, and then leave the rest to create the soft appearance.

Add loose curls or waves to the rest of your hair to give it more character. This style is great for casual occasions as well as formal occasions.

  • Side-Swept Victory Rolls

The best way to style victory rolls is to place them on the opposite side of your head for a symmetrical look. This design brings attention to a particular aspect of the face. This makes it the ideal choice to wear the most striking earrings. It conveys a sense of glamour and elegance, ideal for formal events and themed events.

  • Double Victory Rolls with Ponytails: Combine the drama of double victory rolls and the practicality of a ponytail to create the most fun style. Put two rolls on the top of the head and tie hair in an elegant ponytail or a stylish low bun.

Use scarves, ribbons, or hair tie to give the look an old-fashioned look with a modern twist. This is a great way of creating a unique twist on the traditional rolls, but still being practical and fashionable.

Victory rolls are customizable to match any hair style or style. If you’re creative and the right tools you can modify the classic look to reflect your individual style.
